Six Pac Invitational May 3 & 4, 2003
Here is my report of the Six Pac Invitational Horseshoe pitching tournament held at the New Melle horseshoe club in New Melle, MO near St. Louis. This tournament has a Men's 40' class and a mixed 30' class for Women and Elder Men. The 30' class was won by the current 30' world champion, Bob Logan of Indiana. He beat Joan Elmore of Tennessee. Finishing in 3rd place was Amy Francis of Ohio. In the Men's class, 16 of the top players were competing in 40 point round robin competition. The top 8 seeded players played against the bottom 8 seeded players in the first day of competition. I was the #2 seed behind Ohio's Alan Francis. On the first day of competition I was very consistent game to game. My low game was a 75.6% effort against Randy Rein of Wisconsin and my best game was 82.6% against former world champion Mark Seibold of Indiana. Even though my games as a whole were consistent, I was quite streaking in the individual games. I would have strings of ringers followed by a stretch of misses (single ringers) and then have a string of ringers again. It was rather frustrating to be able to throw a good stretch of shoes and then have another segment in which I wasn't able to make many doubles. Fortunately I didn't have long bad segments, but by the same token my good stretches were a bit shorter than I would have liked. I managed to win all of my first 8 games. The only other player to win all of his games the first day was Alan Francis. Paul Lacrosse of Colorado lost to Mark Seibold in round 8 for his only loss of the day. 5 players had 5 wins and 3 losses.

The second day had the top 8 seeded players matched against themselves. I again was fairly consistent game to game with streaks inside the games. I lost to Paul Lacrosse in round 12 when he pitched a very nice 81.6% against me and I only managed 75%. In round 14 I pitched my best game of the tournament when I shot 85.7% against Mandell Proctor. Paul had 3 losses with one game to go as he lost to Mandell Proctor and Alan Francis on rounds 10 and 11. Going into the last round Alan Francis was still undefeated and I needed to beat him to force a playoff. I pitched a halfway decent game, but so did Alan and he beat me 41-25 as he only missed one shoe in about the last 20 shoes of the game. I ended up finishing in 2nd place with a 78.6% ringer average which was 2nd high to Alan's 84.6. Mark Seibold won the special award for having the high game over their entering average when he pitched 92.3% on his last game of the tournament.
