Bradenton FL Horseshoe Tournament    Dec 15, 2001

I did play in a horseshoe tournament last weekend in Bradenton, FL. Here is my 'report'.

I was in the top class with 5 other players. Warren Woosley, Ray Hood, Rosalie Judy, Jim Riley and Glen Hoppes. In horseshoes they keep averages based on the highest 3 tournaments in their last 10 events. Also, down here in FL they tend to handicap a class if the players entering averages have a difference of more than 8%. There was about a 21% difference so the class was handicapped at 90%.

In my first game I played Glen Hoppes. I started with 8 ringers out of 10 and then threw 40 ringers in a row. I won the game with a 96% game. That is one of the best games I have pitched in quite some time. Also, the string of ringers is the highest I have had in many years. I was quite happy. The 2nd game I started with 19 out of 20. I ended up beating Jim Riley with an 82% game. The next game was against Ray Hood, I pitched 72% to Ray's 66% but lost 37-46. My 4th game was against Rosalie Judy. I had 76% to Rosalie's 68% and lost 32-37. In the 5th and final game I shot 76% to Warren Woosley's 84%! He beat me scratch and very soundly with handicap 16-42.

Even though I had the highest average by over 10% (80.4) I finished in 5th place. I was actually tied for 4th place with Ray Hood in wins and they decide ties by who beat who during the round robin. Since Ray beat me I finished in 5th. Glen Hoppes won the group with a 4 wins and 58% and by virtue of having beaten Rosalie Judy during the round robin. Rosalie averaged just under 67%. Warren Woosley was 3rd and averaged 70%. Ray Hood averaged around 65% while Jim Riley struggled with 53%.

I don't know when my next horseshoe tournament will be, but the next PBA Tour event is in Seattle starting Jan 2nd and I plan to be there throwing strikes! So tune in to the ESPN telecasts on Sunday afternoons (morning in the west) to see your favorite bowlers striking away.
