Southern Lanes

Cary

This week we used pattern 4B. This is a difficult pattern that is almost flat for the last 8 feet of the pattern and has a LOT (up to 80 units) of oil at 15 feet. The topography of the lane surface was very uneven which made this pattern even more difficult to play.

As you can see in the 'before' graphs, there is a ratio of 2.8 to 1 at 15 feet, which goes down to 2.5 to 1 at 25 feet and down to 1.5 at 39 feet. This is the opposite of what everyone is used to and forces you to 'create' hold area down the lane since there is none.

Blue Line = 15 feet
Yellow Line = 25 feet
Red Line = 37 feet

There were not many left handers in this tournament so none of the graphs will show very much depletion from left handers. On Sunday Patrick Allen was the only left hander. By the end of the day, he was laying his ball down further right then the right handers, because the right handers had moved all the way to the left gutter.

'A' squad played a more consistent line than 'B' squad. At 15 feet 'A' was at L16 to R18, while 'B' squad covered from L12 to R12. At 25 feet, 'A' squad was keeping the hold area to the left of target swinging the ball out to R12 to R16, while 'B' squad 'chopped' up the hold area, covering from R6 to C20. There is no hold area at 39 feet but you can see that the bowlers on 'A' squad were throwing the ball to the same area, R6 to R12, while 'B' squad had no consistent area of depletion.

'A' squad had 10 in the finals and 'B' squad had 6 in the finals.

In match play, the right handers started around C20 and just kept moving left throughout the day. They did a nice job of keeping the hold area at 25 feet in tact, as they moved left, but just ran out of room on the lane to keep it somewhat scoreable.
