Southern Lanes

Melbourne

This week we used PBA Standard Pattern #3B (Double Trouble). This pattern is 39 feet and uses forward and reverse loads, like #4, but there is some hold built into the forward loads, which makes this pattern a little easier to score on. This pattern is very competitive for all styles both right and left handed. There were both power players and straighter players on both sides of the lane, that made the finals.

On 'A' squad most left handers were at L12 - L14 at 15 feet (blue line), out to about L11 at 25 feet (yellow line) and out to about L10 at 37 feet (red line). There were 9 left handers on this squad so it does not show a lot of depletion. The right handers were in about R14 - C20 at 15 feet (blue line) and out to R11 - R14 at 25 feet (yellow line) and out to R6 - R8 at 37 feet (red line).

On 'B' squad the left handers played deeper than they did on 'A' squad. The graph only shows what I observed, in that most of the left handers were at about L14 to C20 at 15 feet (blue line). Some were a little outside L10. At 25 feet (yellow line), the deeper players were at L12 - L15 and the guys that played out a little further were around L10. Both were around the L10 area at 37 feet (yellow line). There were 14 left handers on this squad so it was a little easier to determine where they played. The right handers started in aroundR14 to just left of C20 at 15 feet (blue line), although some played a little deeper to about L18 - L16. The deeper players were around R13 - R16 at 25 feet (yellow line) and the others were around R8 - R10. At 37 feet (red line), most were around R6 - R10.

In match play there was a big hole dug into the pattern at 15 feet (blue line) by both right and left handers around R18 - L14. The left handers were out to the L10 to L14 area at 25 feet (yellow line) while the right handers were around R14 to R19. The left handers were then around L10 at 37 feet (red line) and the right handers were at R10. Very late in match play and in the TV finals a few of the right handers went out to the gutter and played outside of R5 and used the hold that developed at 25 feet, around R8 - R10 to find a better trajectory to the pocket.
