TAYLOR -- Walter Ray Williams Jr. defeated defending champion Brian Voss, 215-193, to win the 17th annual PBA Greater Detroit Open on Sunday at Taylor Lanes.
It was Williams' 35th career victory, moving him into second place on the PBA career list, six behind Earl Anthony.
"I did think about it (winning his 35th title) once or twice during the match," said Williams, a member of the PBA Hall of Fame. "And I was saying, 'OK, don't do that, we're thinking about bowling now.' "
It was the fourth time Williams and Voss, also a member of the Hall of Fame, had met in a championship match. Williams leads the series, 3-2.
In the wild-card round, Voss of Atlanta defeated Lonnie Waliczek of Wichita, Kan., 213-196. In the semifinals, Williams beat John Roberts of Glenallen, Va., 227-222, and Voss defeated top seed Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas, 229-226. Voss needed three strikes in the 10th frame to secure the victory.
"Throwing those three strikes against Mike in the 10th drained me," Voss said. "... Five minutes wasn't enough time to relax and regroup to face Walter."
Williams, of Ocala, Fla., started the championship match with four strikes. Voss struggled in his first three frames and in his fourth, he missed a 6-10 spare.
Williams earned $40,000 for the victory. Voss won $20,000.
It was announced that the PBA Tour will move its season-ending World Championship tournament from Toledo to Taylor on March 3-9, 2003.
