Here is my report of the second day of the PBA Cambridge Credit Classic in Syosset, NY. I was in 9th place after the first round of qualifying. I started the 2nd round playing up 7 with pretty good speed using a reactive ball (#1532). I bowled a pretty good first game, but I went high in the 2nd frame for a 4-6-7 and an open. I had 3 taps in between strikes, but managed a double and finishing turkey in the 10th to shoot a 207. The next game was very frustrating as I missed the pocket 3 times and had a big split every time. I did have a turkey at the end of the game and shot 179. In the 3rd game it was more of the same except that I didn't open on all 3 missed pocket shots, but I made up for the bucket spare by missing a 10 pin. Since I didn't have any consecutive strikes I ended up with a disappointing 160. At the end of the game I moved inside to around 18 and threw it slow in the 8th frame. I still left two 10 pins, one of them which I missed. I missed the pocket 3 times the next game with another open on a greek church (4-6-7-9-10). In the 4th game I moved out to around 11 with more speed. I did manage a turkey to shoot 199. I was fortunate the 5th game as I missed the pocket twice and didn't have any opens. A turkey opener and a double at the end of the game helped me to a 223. In the 6th game I started with three 10 pins and a 4-7-10. I managed a 4 bagger before missing the pocket a couple of times at the end of the game for a 211. I started the 7th game with a 1-2-6-10 which I barely missed as I fit the ball between the head pin and the 6 but the head pin missed the 2 pin. I went high in the 2nd frame and made the 3-6-10. I decided to move inside to around 21 and threw a 3 bagger. The string was broken when I had a light hit and the 4 pin moved over to almost the 5 pin spot. I followed that with a solid 9. In the 9th frame I went high and left a 4-6-7 split. I turkeyed in the 10th frame for a 203. The next was better as I missed the pocket 3 times and didn't have an open. I had a double and a finishing 4 bagger to shoot 223. The left lane on that last pair hooked quite a bit more and I ended up playing 25 on the left and 21 on the right lane. In the last game of the day I started playing 23 and managed a light strike. I moved right in the 2nd frame, but it wasn't enough as I went light and left a 2-4-10 which I missed. A solid 10 was followed by a 2 pin after I moved right again on the right lane. A strike was followed by a solid 10 and then I went high on my good lane sparing a 6-10. I again went light on the tight lane leaving a 2-7 which I missed. I was pretty much not going to make the top 32 at this time. I did manage a double before leaving a weak 10 on my 2nd shot in the 10th to shoot 181. It seemed that these last 2 weeks were not giving me very many breaks. I guess I was getting too many breaks in the first 6 weeks. I ended up missing the 32nd place by 26 pins. I finished the week at +146 or a 208.1 average. In the 2nd round of qualifying I had 53 strikes out of 101 shots. I had one strike while missing the pocket, a cross over strike on my fill ball in the 1st game. I missed the pocket 26 times. My strike % on pocket shots was 52 out of 75 pocket shots or 69%. I had 13 opens. 11 were splits (4-6-7, 4-10, 4-6-7, 4-6-7-10, 2-5-7, 4-6-7-9-10, 4-7-10, 4-6-7, 2-4-10, 2-7) with one missed washout (1-2-6-10), and the single 10 pin. I did pick up a bucket (2-4-5-8) and the 2-4-5 twice plus the 2-8. My carry wasn't that great and it seemed that most of my strikes were not together. I was never able to get anything really going. I would either get tapped, or throw a bad shot, and way too many of those ended up being opens. Walter Ray |
