UPDATED 11-01-03

Here is my report of the 3rd day of the PBA Banquet Open held at Thunderbowl Lanes in Council Bluffs, IA.

My round of 16 was against Jason Hurd. I started the match playing a slight hook from 7 out to around 5 with a low diff reactive ball (#0008). I started with a couple of light pocket shots with one strike before going high in the 3rd frame. Jason was playing a pretty decent hook around 12 out to around 4 and started with 5 flush strikes. Since I wasn't crazy about the reaction I was trying to play, I decided to move a little left and hook the ball using a more aggressive reactive ball (#0640) after the 3rd frame. I ended up moving in to 11 going out to around 3. Jason won the first game easily 204-242.

I started with a ball in the channel and an open in game 2. Jason started with a double surrounded by 4 pins and then missed a 3-10. I moved right in the 2nd frame and picked up my speed and had a 4 bagger starting in the 4th frame. Jason missed the 3-6-7-10 in the 8th frame and doubled in the 9th and 10th. I ended up winning 209-188. Jason started the 3rd game with a missed 3-6-9-10 and came back with a double thanks to a cross over strike. I chopped the 3-6 in the 3rd frame. In the 5th frame Jason missed the 4-10 split, but I wasn't able to take advantage as I kept missing the pocket. I did make the 3-10 split, but Jason started striking as he had a turkey. I was never able to get any consecutive strikes and Jason won the 3rd game 191-182. I switched to a shiny low particle ball (#0198) and moved left and hooked the ball. I had a turkey after a 4 pin while Jason started with a 5 bagger. I went high in the 5th frame to open on a 4-6-10. Jason spared the 3-6-10 in the 6th and started striking again. I also started striking, but was over 30 pins behind. Jason crossed over in the 9th frame leaving only the 6 pin for a spare. Jason doubled in the 10th, but left the 2-8-10 on his fill ball to give me a chance to tie the game if I struck out. I threw a couple of good shots, but a solid 10 left me losing the 4th game 242-253. In game 5, Jason started with a missed 10 pin. I started with a strike and a solid 8. Jason then started striking while I had trouble getting all 10 pins to fall as I left a 4 pin, another solid 10 and a high 4 pin in the 6th. I finally had a turkey starting in the 7th frame. Jason missed the head pin left in the 9th frame to leave a small opening for me, but a 4-9 in the 10th for me ended any chance I had. Jason won the 5th game 216-256.

In the round of 16 match I had 28 strikes out of 55 shots. I had no strikes while missing the pocket. I missed the pocket 13 times.
My strike % on pocket shots was 28 out of 42 pocket shots or 66%.
I had 3 opens. 1 was a split (4-6-10) and 2 were missed spares (a full rack and 3-6). I did make the rest of my spares which included a 3-6, 6-10, 2-4-5-8, 4-7, 3-10 and a 4-9.

Jason Hurd in the round of 16 match had 36 strikes out of 55 shots. He had 2 strikes while missing the pocket, a cross over in the 2nd and 3rd games. He missed the pocket 14 times.
His strike % on pocket shots was 34 out of 41 pocket shots or 83%.
He had 7 opens. 4 were splits (3-10, 3-6-7-10, 4-10, 4-6) and 3 were missed spares (3-6-10, 3-6-9-10, 10). He made the 3-6-10 and 1-3-9 which were his only other combination leaves.

My carry percentage wasn't very good while Jason had good carry. However, when Jason was able to hit the pocket, he usually hit it pretty well. Jason had a little bit of trouble in games 2 and 3, but I wasn't able to take advantage and then Jason blew me away the last 2 games.
