Here is my report of my third day of the PBA Empire State Open held at Bowlers Club in Latham, New York.

My round of 16 match was against Patrick Healey Jr. Patrick bowled very well in qualifying as well as in his match against Robert Smith. I started out using the same ball (#0132) that I started the other rounds with. I was trying to play around 12 at the arrows with a little bit of hook, but I was never very comfortable and made several bad shots. Pat started with a double while I left ringing 10 pins. In the 5th frame I went high and left the 4-6-7. Pat doubled again in the 8th and 9th. I needed some strikes to force Pat to do something in the 10th, but I went high and left the 4-6-7 again. I lost the first game 218-183.

I managed to start the 2nd game with 5 strikes, but left the 3-6 in the 6th frame. Pat left the 2-8-10 in the 2nd frame for an open and left a solid 8 in the 5th. Pat added a solid 10 in the 7th frame and struck in the 8th. I added a double in the 8th and 9th to win 244-204. Pat started game 3 with a solid 10 and solid 8 before going very high and striking on a shot which could have left the 4-6-7-10. I switched to my more aggressive particle ball in the third game to see if that would help my reaction. But I left a 2 pin in the 2nd followed by the 2-4-5. Pat had a 4 bagger starting in the 3rd frame followed by another solid 8. I also had a 4 bagger, but went high in the 8th frame leaving the 3-6-10 for a spare. Pat left a solid 10 in the 8th followed by a strike. I finished first and had a strike in the 9th frame, but a 2-8 in the 10th left the door wide open for Pat. Pat took advantage and struck out to win 247-224.

I decided that since I wasn't getting a very good reaction trying to hook the ball a bit I should go straighter, so I move a bit right and played up 11 in game 4. I started with a strike and a weak 10 while Pat started with a double before leaving a light 7 pin. I doubled and left a 4 pin followed by a 10 pin and a strike. Pat strung 4 strikes in a row before leaving a weak 10. I followed with 3 strikes leading up to the 10th frame. Pat left a solid 10 in the 9th and then threw 3 strikes in the 10th for a 247. I needed all 3 strikes to tie, but left a weak 10 in the 10th followed by a bucket (2-4-5-8) to lose with a 223.

Pat started the 5th game with 4 strikes before leaving a weak 10. I started with a 5 bagger thanks to tripping the 4-7 on the first frame, but a weak 10 ended my string. Pat came back with a double as did I. Pat then left another weak 10 before striking in the 9th. I left a 4 pin in the 9th and then doubled in the 10th before leaving a weak 10 on my fill ball. Pat needed all 3 strikes to win by a pin which is exactly what he did. Pat won game five 258-257. I didn't get lined up at the start of the match the way I should have and made too many bad shots. Pat bowled a very good match as he usually does.

In the round of 16 match I had 36 strikes out of 57 shots. I had one strike while missing the pocket, a tripped 4-7 in the 1st shot of the 5th game.
I missed the pocket 12 times.
My strike % on pocket shots was 35 out of 45 pocket shots or 77%.
I had 2 opens, both were 4-6-7 splits. I made all of my spares which included a 3-6, two 2-4-5, 3-6-10, and 2-8.

In the round of 16 match Patrick Healey Jr had 41 strikes out of 58 shots.
He had no strikes while missing the pocket.
He missed the pocket 3 times.
His strike % on pocket shots was 41 out of 55 pocket shots or 75%.
He had 1 open, a 2-8-10. His only combination spare was the 3-6-10 which he made.

I didn't bowl a very good match. In the first three games I was struggling with my line to the pocket and making too many bad shots. Patrick bowled a very good match and was keeping me in the first few games due to his carry. The lanes never really broke down for me while Patrick started playing around 22 and moved into 28 by the end of the fifth game.

Hopefully next week I can bowl better.
