UPDATED 11-01-03

Here is my report of the 2nd day of the PBA Greater Kansas City Open held at Lunar Bowl in Blue Springs, Missouri. Blue Springs is about 15 miles east of Kansas City. Beautiful Lunar Bowl is hosting the PBA tour for the 2nd consecutive year.

After the first day of qualifying I was in a tie for 60th place at +63 while 32nd place was at +109. I decided to use the same ball (#4543)NO PHOTO I started with in the 1st round except that I was going towards the right channel with some side rotation instead of up the lane. The first game was pretty good as I only missed the pocket once and had a 5 bagger for 237. Game 2 was also a nice game as I had a couple of 10 pins with a bad fill ball to shoot 256. In game 3 I had a 6 bagger, but finished with a 4-6-7 split to shoot 234. In game 4 I started with an 8 bagger before going a bit high leaving the 4-7 to shoot 267. Game 5 was another nice game as I had a turkey, a double and a finishing turkey in the 10th for a 236. Game 6 was pretty good even though I started by missing the pocket the first 2 shots. A cross over strike in the 9th helped me to shoot 255. Game 7 was another nice game as I started with a 5 bagger before going high on a couple of shots. A double in the 10th helped me to a 244. I started the 8th game with a ball in the channel and a missed spare. I did manage a late double, but missed the pocket 3 of my last 5 shots to shoot 183. In the 9th game I switched to a reactive ball (#0640) and stayed out playing 5 out to 2. I started with a 5 bagger and added a turkey on my way to shooting 254. I went from barely making the cut to leading the tournament at +429. I had a very nice reaction and was able to get the ball to have a nice angle into the pocket so my carry was also pretty good. My first match in the round of 32 was against Kevin Duncan who was making his first match of his career.

In the second round I had 67 strikes out of 101 shots. I had 1 strike while missing the pocket, a cross over strike in the 6th game. I missed the pocket 18 times.
My strike % on pocket shots was 66 out of 83 pocket shots or 80%.
I had 2 opens. 1 was a split (4-6-7) and 1 was the missed channel ball. I did pretty good on the rest of my spares as I picked up the 3-6-10 4 times, 2-4-5 twice, 3-6 twice, 4-7 twice, and the 3-6-9-10 plus all of single pins.

My match with Kevin Duncan would seem at the outset to be a match in my favor since Kevin was bowling in his first match play event. I started the match playing an outside line going from 3 out to around 1 with the same ball (#4543) I used in the morning block. Kevin started out the match with several bad shots, but I was only able to get two doubles before going high in the 6th and 8th frames. Kevin thru a 4 bagger up to the 9th frame to take the lead. I left a 10 pin in the 10th frame and ended up losing the first game 216-225. In the 2nd game, I moved left on both lanes, but gradually moved right on the right lane. Kevin had a little bit of trouble on the left lane as he had back to back 4-6-7's on it in the 4th and 6th frames. I finished with an 8 bagger to win the 2nd game 269-199. After an opening double I threw my 3rd shot wide and in the channel. I made the spare, but Kevin had a double and then a 5 bagger. I had a turkey, but a solid 10 in the 9th frame pretty much sealed the game for Kevin as he won 248-218. I started the 4th game with a couple of high shots on the left lane, one being the 4-6 in the 3rd frame. Kevin had two early doubles and I had a 5 bagger starting in the 4th frame before leaving a solid 10 in the 9th. Another 10 pin in the 10th frame and Kevin added another strike in the 10th to his 2 in the 8th and 9th to win the 4th game 237-226. In the 5th game we both started with strikes surrounding a 10 pin. I doubled in the 4th frame while Kevin left another 10 pin and then the 3-6-10. I left a 7 pin in the 5th frame and we both had strikes in the 6th and 7th frames. I left a weak 10 in the 8th frame and a 4 pin in the 9th frame while Kevin was striking. I struck out in the 10th frame to force Kevin to strike in the 10th which he did to win the 5th game 233-227. I bowled pretty well as I averaged over 230 for the 5 games, but Kevin was victorious over me despite my knocking more pins down for the 5 games due to the lopsided 2nd game.

In the round of 32 match I had 39 strikes out of 57 shots. I had 1 strike while missing the pocket, a tripped 4-7-10 on my fill ball in the 1st game. I missed the pocket 7 times.
My strike % on pocket shots was 38 out of 50 pocket shots or 76%.
I had 1 open, a 4-6 split in the 4th game. I did pretty good on the rest of my spares as I picked up the 3-6-10 twice, 3-6, and the full rack when my ball went in the channel.

In the round of 32 match, Kevin Duncan had 32 strikes out of 55 shots. He had no strikes while missing the pocket. He missed the pocket 10 times.
His strike % on pocket shots was 32 out of 45 pocket shots or 71%.
He had 2 opens. Both were 4-6-7 splits. Kevin made the rest of his spares which included a 2-8, 6-10, 3-6-10 twice.

Kevin managed to get his strikes in the right places to beat me. What is remarkable is that he beat me 4 games to 1 even though I knocked down more pins than him. I also had 7 more strikes and 1 less open but barely knocked down more pins than him for the 5 games. Sometimes the placement of your shots can make a big difference. After just barely making the cut and then jumping to the lead it was very disappointing to lose in the round of 32 when I could easily have beaten most of the other bowlers in the round with the scores that were bowled.
