Report on the Denver Open at Brunswick Lakewood Lanes in Lakewood, Colorado.

We bowled on the 'D' pattern this week. This pattern seems to play about anywhere on the lanes that a bowler is comfortable with.

My round of 64 match was against local Ryan Cosyns. I played up around 6 with a dull low particle ball. Ryan also started the match playing pretty close to where I was. I dominated the 1st game as Ryan missed the pocket several times and missed the 3-6-10 in the 9th frame while I had a double and a 4 bagger to win 236-195. In the 2nd game, I had quite a few taps and when Ryan gave me an opening in the 10th frame, I was only able to get 9 pins down on my first shot of the 10th leaving a light 7 pin to lose 196-211. I switched to a shinier ball in game 3, but played the same line. Ryan did a lot of striking in game 3, but 3 missed splits helped me to win 223-212. In the 4th game it was pretty close until the end of the game when Ryan left a pocket 7-10 followed by the 2-4-10 which he missed. I struck out to win 238-187. I had been having a bit of trouble with the approaches and in the last game I slowed down and started hooking it just a bit playing about 8 out to about 4 with the same ball. I started game 5 with a tripped 4-7-10 and tripped 4-9 for a double. Ryan again had mores splits as he left the 3-4-7-10, 4-6-9-10, and 2-4-8-10 for opens by the 7th frame while started striking. I won game 5 easily 258-154 and won the match.

My round of 32 match was against Bryon Smith. Bryon and I both were playing around 8-9 at the arrows with just a bit of hook. I decided to use shiny ball for the start of the game, since I had a bit of trouble in the 1st match. I again had trouble with my carry as I was never able to double in game 1 and had 3 opens in game 2, so Bryon easily won the first 2 games 222-195 and 256-173. Things were looking much better in game 3. I had switched to a duller surfaced ball and moved left and started to hooking the ball a bit more. Bryon bowled a very good game, except that he threw a bucket (2-4-5-8) on his fill ball to give me a good opportunity to win the game. Unfortunately for me I left a 4-9 split which missed to lose 255-243. Game 4 was more bad carry as never struck until the 9th frame when Bryon had the game sewn up as he won 228-212. I had a pretty decent reaction to the pocket, but I wasn't able to get the ball to the good places to carry. It was a frustrating week, but I was kind of fortunate that my first opponent struggled.
