Here is my report of the PBA regional tournament held at Ft. Gordon Lanes at Ft. Gordon, GA. Ft. Gordon is next to Augusta, GA which is on the border of South Carolina about 100 miles inland.
The lane oil pattern was supposed to be one of the tougher patterns that the PBA uses. A light strip of oil around the 8th board with oil across the lane. With not much help from the oil pattern the scores were kept low. If you missed right the ball went right, likewise if you missed left the ball went left. On a condition like this you can see how many bad shots you make.
I was on 'B' squad. I knew that the lanes were tough having watched the 'A' squad bowl a few games and knowing what there scores were. 8th place was +27 with only one bowler over +70, Norm Titus who was +151. I used a particle ball (#0073)
and started throwing the ball around 12 to about 8 with pretty good speed. In qualifying I didn't really throw the ball that great, but I did manage to pick up most of my spares and a couple of splits. The first game I missed a 4-6-7, but picked up 2-4-8-10 and had a double and a turkey for a 216. The next game I had a turkey, but missed the pocket 6 times and managed a 211. In the next game I had a double and a turkey and made the 2-7 for a 224. In the 4th game I had a double and a turkey, but missed the 4-6-7 and a 1-2-4-10 for a 197 game. In game 5 I missed the 1-2-4-8 by hooking the ball and left only the 8 pin. I picked up the 2-7-8 and had a double for a 195. In the 6th game I missed a 4-9 and a 2-8-10 and a double for a 184. I decided to move inside to the 5th arrow and hook the ball. I picked up the 3-6-7 and the 3-9-10 to go along with a double and a 5 bagger for a 241. I struggled in the 8th game tripping out the 4-10 for strikes twice but I missed the 9-10 and a 1-2-4-10. I did pick up the 3-10 in the 9th frame when I needed to mark. I finished at +39 and 13th place.
I had 42 strikes out of 88 shots. I had 6 strikes missing the pocket. I missed the pocket 35 times.

|9/ ||X||7/ ||X||7/||81 ||X||63||8/||9/7 ||171|
My strike % on pocket shots was 36 out of 53 pocket shots or 68%.
I had 8 opens. 5 were splits (4-6-7, 4-6-7, 4-9, 2-8-10, 9-10), 2 missed washouts (two 1-2-4-10's) and a 1-2-4-7. I did pick up the 2-4-8-10, 2-7, 2-7-8, 3-6-7, 3-9-10, and a 3-10).
I didn't feel that I bowled very well, but I was able to make spares and get enough strikes to make the cut.
In match play I used the same ball (#0073) playing a very similar line. I started against newcomer Wayne Autrey. He is a lefty I believe who is bowling in his first regional. Wayne had a 8 bagger with the help of a couple of cross over strikes and a tripped 3 pin to start the match before missing a 2-4-7-8 and sparing the 2-7 to win 253-236. I bowled a very good 2nd game also, but was unable to get a double and lost to Stoney Baker 199-201. I bowled a good 3rd game also, but couldn't carry as I managed 1 double to beat Norm Titus 208-203. The 4th game was against John May. We both struggled with me getting the best of the deal winning 170-158. In game 5 I beat Scott McLean 198-189. Game 6 was against Patrick Allen who had taken the lead. I bowled a good game getting a 4 bagger for a 227 to win over Patrick's 216. The 7th game was very good for me as I had started with a 5 bagger and finished with a 5 bagger. J.D. Wilson was another lefty who made the top 16. My 265 was a winner over his 184. Last week winner, Jerry Horn took it easy on me as he struggled shooting a 179. I had some good breaks to go along with my good shots for a 252 win. I vaulted into 2nd place after the morning session.
I started the next round against local Mark Bakke. I had an excellent game winning 268-203. Unfortunately that was the end of my great games. Jason Hurd bowled a great game against me winning 277-188. I struggled the 11th game losing against Ed Bumgarner 179-200. Ryan Smith struggled against me as I won 205-154. Game 13 was against Chris Hayden and he had passed me in the standings. A win would be really nice. Unfortunately I didn't get the double in the 10th frame and lost 214-224. Pete Dohan beat me the next game 215-202. I was fortunate against Chris Collins the next game winning 220-214. The position round was against Patrick Allen as Chris Hayden struggled the few games leading up to the last game. I bowled a pretty decent game shooting 224 only to loose to Patrick's 243. Chris Hayden threw 3 strikes in the 10th frame to win his match and be seeded 2nd knocking me down to 3rd.
I decided to try something else in the step ladder match thinking that I would need a better reaction to win. I started with a couple of taps and then threw a gutter ball only to get tapped on the spare. Stoney started with an open and came back with a string of strikes. I did manage a turkey, but a 2-8-10 pretty much did me in as Stoney struck to the 9th frame. Stoney beat me 254-171. My score could have been much better, but I don't think that it would have been enough to win the game. Stoney was beat by Chris Hayden who in turn lost to Patrick in a very close game 225-215.

In match play I had 101 strikes out of 188 shots with 6 missed pocket strikes and 54 missed pocket shots.
My strike percentage was 95 out of 134 or 71%.
I had 15 opens. 9 were splits (2-4-8-10, 4-6-7, 4-10, 4-10, 6-7, 4-6-7, rip 7-10, 4-7-10, 2-8-10) and the other 6 were (1-28-10, 1-2-4-10, 1-2-8-10, 2-8, full rack, and the 3-6-9-10). I picked up the 2-10, 1-2-10, 1-2-4-6-10, and the 1-2-4-10.
My opponents had 96 strikes out of 190 shots with 9 non pocket strikes and 75 missed pocket shots.
Their strike percentage was 87 out of 115 or 76%.
They had 18 opens. 10 splits (2-10, 4-6-7-10, 2-7, 4-6-10, 4-6, 3-4-6-7-9-10, 4-6-7, 4-6-7, 7-10 and 4-6-7-9-10) and 8 spares (2-4-7-8, 1-2-3-4-5-7-8, 3-6-9-10, 10, 1-2-10, 3-9, 1-2-3-4-5-7-8, 6-10, 1-2-4-6-10). They picked up 1 split, the 2-7).
I bowled pretty well in match play and had a few high games. Unfortunately I came up a bit short on being seeded higher and then lost to the great game that Stoney bowled against me.
Congratulations go again to Patrick Allen as he won yet another regional tournament.
